Eww. what is this thing?!?

i got an ingrown hair and it would pus and ew and nasty. i would drain it but it would come back. now its become a hard ball of ew. i finally found and plucked this hair out of it,the hair that caused the infection which was sickly long.. (ew) but nothing has happend. this hard ball is now,one with me. lol. it no longer inflames nor hurts. first of all..WHAT IS IT?..why did this happen and how can i rid of it..other than surgery. anything i could get over the counter that may work before i bring this issue to a doctor?
